There are two types of news stories about Rhode Island:
“Rhode Island may be the smallest state, but…”
“This hurricane/iceberg/wildfire is [insert number] times the size of Rhode Island.”
Downcity Ink is different. This literary newsletter is a collection of inside jokes in the form of essays, humor, and maybe a few daydreams about what to do with the Superman Building (we love it; who doesn’t?).
We’re currently seeking submissions and eager to read your best words about Rhode Island. We want essays full of humor and life, we want satire about the way we give directions, we want love letters to Providence, etc. etc. etc. If you’ve got it, send it—the only real parameters are that it must be about Rhode Island, by Rhode Islanders, for Rhode Islanders. Your audience is you—other folks with strong relationships to the Ocean State.
We pay for all submissions we publish and will have a Submittable page up and running soon with more details. In the meantime, please email downcityink@gmail.com with your submission in a Google Doc or Word file and a very short note explaining your relationship to Rhode Island. Let us know if your piece is fiction or non-fiction. We love stories that are quirky, funny, lighthearted, and full of inside jokes about the Ocean State. Target word range is between 750 and 1,500 words, but we’ll read pieces up to 2,500 words. We’ll aim to get back to you with an answer within two weeks.
